El Mercurio, in its “Sustainability and Business” section, covered the update of Chile’s Technical Standard for the Coordination and Operation of the Electricity System and the role of battery energy storage systems (BESS), whose installed capacity in the National Electricity System already exceeds 4,800 MW and could reach 8,100 MW by 2029.

Bernardo Severino, head of studies at CENTRA, explained that this regulatory update is particularly relevant for batteries, since their contribution depends on how charging and discharging decisions are coordinated over time. In his view, improving that coordination and its economic valuation makes it possible to use the flexibility of storage and to send clearer signals for investing in the capacity the system needs.

The article also includes the views of the National Energy Commission, the Renewable Generation Association (AGR), ACERA and Generadoras de Chile on defining the opportunity cost as the mechanism to remunerate storage.
