Specialist in nanotechnology and materials, focusing on energy, environmental applications and the micro-nanostructure-property relationship of ceramics.

He is the author and co-author of more than 310 research articles, published in the international journal International Scientific Indexing (ISI). To his credits, Mangalaraja has 60 book chapters, four patents, one of the Editors in four Books and more than 200 research presentations in various International Conferences/Seminars. He has guided 13 PhD fellows and 40 postdoctoral researchers.

For his credits, he has been ranked second by the Ministry of Science and Technology of Chile in the branch of Engineering and Technology at the national level. In addition, he has participated as director, responsible/principal investigator and co-investigator of 45 research projects funded by ANID (National Agency for Research and Development of Chile).
