CENTRA UAI Academic to Teach Course at Stanford University
December 21, 2023
After winning the “Edward Laroque Tinker Visiting Professor” fellowship, Dr. Javiera Barrera, a Ph.D. in Engineering Sciences and professor at the Faculty of Engineering and Sciences at Universidad Adolfo Ibáñez (FIC), will be a visiting professor at Stanford University for a quarter in 2024. During her visit, she will teach a course based on her research and work.
Dr. José Blanchet, a Ph.D. in Operations Research and professor, nominated Javiera Barrera for the fellowship, highlighting her engineering career and potential to make a positive contribution to Stanford’s academic community.
As part of this opportunity, Javiera Barrera will teach the course “Resilience and Reliable Network Design,” aimed at master’s students in Engineering. The course will cover classic aspects of network performance evaluation and design, as well as topics related to simultaneous component failures.
“Today, electrical transmission and telecommunications networks face increasing demands and, therefore, are subject to higher standards. To meet these challenges, it is essential to study the reliability and resilience of networks when failures are not isolated,” explained the UAI Engineering and Sciences professor.
Barrera also pointed out that Chile and the state of California—where Stanford is located—share common challenges due to their similar geography. “In the context of network design, both regions face major earthquakes and wildfires that impact infrastructure,” she stated, adding that this “encourages us to exchange ideas and collaborate on research that can help overcome these challenges.”
Additionally, as a specialist in stochastic models, Barrera plans to initiate research collaborations in applied probability with faculty from Stanford’s Department of Management Science and Engineering, further expanding her international academic network.
