Distributed generation as a planning decision

This line asks whether Chile should actively plan for more rooftop solar and other small-scale clean generation, instead of simply assuming how much will appear in the future.

This work package is part of the CENTRA Decarbonisation Programme, together with four other lines of work.See the programme →

Objective

Purpose

Chile's Long-Term Energy Planning (PELP), the exercise through which the country defines the power infrastructure it will need over the coming decades, currently treats distributed generation as an input rather than an investment decision. This line develops a planning methodology that includes it as an explicit decision variable, with its system value quantified in at least three PELP-consistent scenarios and a sensitivity analysis on grid constraints, financing barriers and contributions to flexibility and resilience.

Questions it addresses

Research
  1. How much distributed generation should Chile plan for, and where is it most cost-effective?
  2. How does it compare with centralised generation, storage and network alternatives?
  3. How much fossil generation does it displace, how much grid infrastructure does it avoid and how much does it lower total system cost?
