Storage to replace diesel at the industrial peak

During peak hours, much of Chilean industry disconnects from the grid and runs its own diesel generators. This line shows with real pilots that storage can replace that diesel.

This work package is part of the CENTRA Decarbonisation Programme, together with four other lines of work.See the programme →

Objective

Purpose

Disconnecting at peak to avoid peak tariffs is a rational decision for each company and, added up, a source of CO2 emissions and local pollution that does not show in power generation statistics. This line builds evidence through two industrial pilots, one at a dairy plant in southern Chile and one with solar plus storage in the salmon industry, together with a comparative techno-economic assessment of three storage configurations and a scale-up roadmap for Chilean industry.

Questions it addresses

Research
  1. How much diesel is burned at the industrial peak, and how much does it emit?
  2. Can battery storage replace those generators at a competitive cost?
  3. Which configuration works best: behind-the-meter storage, storage with solar PV or shared storage at distribution level?
