Electrifying with demand flexibility and affordable tariffs
Electrifying end uses that still run on fossil fuels is one of the largest decarbonisation levers left in Chile, as long as it remains affordable and the new demand does not overload the grid.
Objective
PurposeThis line quantifies the electrification potential of at least four priority economic sectors, beyond official projections, with a constant focus on affordability and electricity prices. It includes the flexibility value that this demand brings to the system, scenarios that ensure the additional consumption is met with clean generation, and tariff mechanisms and incentives that make electrification attractive for vulnerable consumers too. It looks for electrification in thermal processes, transport and new electricity-intensive loads such as desalination and data centres.
Questions it addresses
Research- In which sectors does electrification cut the most emissions at the lowest cost?
- How much flexibility does electrified demand bring to the system?
- Which tariffs and incentives make electrification lower, not raise, the bills of vulnerable households?
